Works at the Leonard Tunnel have caused significant delays for commuters in recent weeks, but there was unprecedented chaos on Monday morning due to the return of holiday-makers into Brussels.

Several different renovation projects on the roads surrounding Brussels were scheduled for French-speaking holidays (27 April to 12 May). However, several projects were extended and have therefore created heavy congestion on Monday morning.

There were long tailbacks between Waterloo and Overijse this morning due to works at the Leonard Tunnel, one of Brussels' main motorway intersections. Commuters travelling at around 07:00 saw their journeys extended by over an hour. Railway operators SNCB and Infrabel have introduced additional trains between 13 May and 28 June to compensate for long-standing delays.

There are queues on the A12 from Meise to Laeken as works on the bridges over the Dikke Linde roundabout are closed and traffic has been diverted.

At 10:00, there are currently 20 to 30 minute delays at the Leonard Tunnel and 30 minute delays at the A12, according to spokesperson for Brussels Mobility Inge Paemen. "Keep your patience and check out alternative ways to travel to Brussels tomorrow," she told The Brussels Times. "This could be cycling if it's a short distance or one of the additional trains currently running."

The Reyers-Centre tunnel (which connects the A3 to Avenue de Cortenbergh (N23) towards the city centre) is also closed due to works.

Translation: Following an accident at the intersection of Boulevard de la Woluwe and Avenue Paul Hymans in the direction of Montgomery, the road is temporarily closed to traffic.

There have been several incidents this morning, prompting further delays. Brussels Mobility announced that the intersection of Boulevard de la Woluwe and Avenue Paul Hymans towards Montgomery was closed for this reason. The Madou tunnel towards Midi was also temporarily closed but has since re-opened.
