A commuter was burnt by a corrosive substance on a train in Ottignies on Saturday, leading to her hospitalisation.
Firefighters from Wallon Brabant were called to the scene in the morning. The incident took place shortly before 11:30 am on a stationary train at Ottignies station.
For an undetermined reason, the woman on board was burnt by what is suspected to be a highly corrosive agent. The victim was assisted by ambulance service and taken to hospital. A coordination plan was enacted, involving the police, local rescue services, and the Civil Protection.
The substance involved may potentially be hydrofluoric acid, kept in a bottle. The bag containing the bottle was removed from the train at Ottignies station, however, the bottle itself stayed on board as the train continued its journey.
A Civil Protection team was en route to Arlon, the final stop of the train, on Saturday afternoon to recover and analyse the suspected bottle.
