Train services between Visé in Belgium and Maastricht in the Netherlands will not resume until Monday 3 June, according to the latest announcement.
Services were initially suspended on Saturday morning following a sudden surge in a local river. The return to normal operations was initially set for 27 May, but the damage was reportedly more severe than anticipated in both countries, stated railway network manager Infrabel on Wednesday. In the meantime, replacement bus services will continue to run.
A significant amount of ballast from a one-kilometre section of the track was swept away by the floodwaters, causing damage to two technical cabins, one of which is located at the Mouland level crossing.
There has also been substantial damage on the Dutch side of the border, exceeding original estimates.
