Since last October, the number of energy sharing activities in Brussels has surged from 46 to 92.
Currently, 814 participants – including households, businesses and public authorities – are sharing energy, up from 500 in November of the previous year, said Brussels Minister of Energy and Climate Transition Alain Maron on Tuesday.
In the Brussels-Capital Region, any citizen, business or public authority can locally produce renewable energy and share it at a mutually agreed price. This sharing can be facilitated through a structured energy community or via a simple agreement, between two households or even the apartments of the same building.
According to Maron, the energy price is determined by the producer and consumer(s), which creates a win-win situation. Energy sharing boosts the number of renewable energy installations as it enhances their profitability through the pooling of investments. It also reduces grid congestion as energy is locally consumed.
Brussels Environment offers free expert facilitation services for those interested in energy sharing. The facilitator can assist in all project stages: legal, technical, administrative and more.
Today, over 1,000 Brussels residents have been assisted by the 'Energy Sharing and Community' facilitator.
