A security guard at the MediaMarkt shop on Rue Neuve in Brussels was stabbed several times by a man at around 11:40 on Friday morning, according to a press release from the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office on Saturday.
The 35-year-old security guard was trying to restrain a man after he set off the alarm at the security gates. However, the man then pulled out a knife on him and stabbed the employee several times.
A customer told Sudinfo that the stabbed employee was found on the ground "bleeding", but no one witnessed the attack itself. The victim was quickly attended to by the emergency services, and the police from the Brussels Capital/Ixelles zone arrived on the scene.
The security guard was then transferred to hospital; his life is not in danger. Meanwhile, the perpetrator was arrested by the police.
Attempted robbery gone wrong
"The incident occurred during a theft check," a spokesperson from the shop told Sudinfo. "The person being checked came to blows with the guard and pulled out a knife."
"From MediaMarkt's point of view, there will obviously be psychological support for the shop's employees, and there are also plans to step up security in the shop to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again," she added.
An investigation by the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office will determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
The suspect was brought before an examining magistrate on Saturday, who charged him with violent robbery using a weapon and placed him under arrest.
