The Lego Group on Tuesday launched a new regional distribution centre in Tessenderlo, Limbourg, targeting mainly business-to-business (B2B) clients.

Occupying a total area of 30,000 square metres, the facility reflects an investment of €75 million. Depending on demand, it could expand to 55,000 m2 and create up to 100 jobs.

This addition complements Lego’s existing site in Jirny, Czech Republic.

“This is our second distribution centre in Europe and it broadens our network to better serve our clients,” Lego’s Chief Operations Officer, Carsten Rasmussen, said at the centre’s inauguration.

Around 1 million orders for European B2B customers are expected at Tessenderlo per year. “Between 25,000 and 35,000 pallets will be stored and distributed here,” the group estimates.

The Belgian centre will be supplied by Lego factories in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, and Kladno, Czech Republic.

The site is eco-conscious, with a wind turbine and solar panels generating 75% of its energy, while heating will be provided by geothermal energy.

Lego’s market share has increased by about 4% per year for the past two years, a trend that was observed throughout the pandemic.

The group recorded a substantial increase in the sale of various model-building kits, as adults, as well as children, began constructing them.

Lego aims to boost its market share further by concentrating more on girls.
