Religious groups call on future governments to keep on funding them

Recognised religious groups in Belgium, and the Buddist Union - which is still awaiting official recognition - have urged political parties and future governments to continue to fund their activities.

In a joint appeal, they emphasised the positive role they play in society and stressed that their activities represent a profitable investment in social cohesion, mental well-being, education, and mutual solidarity.

The appeal received signatures from various associations, including the Buddhist Union, Central Committee of Anglican Worship, Muslim Council, Federal Synod, United Protestant Church, Orthodox Church, Central Israelite Consistory and the Conference of Bishops of Belgium.

The religious groups are hopeful that the incoming legislature will grant recognition to communities that have applied and earned a positive evaluation. They highlight the positive impact that religious communities have within society, above and beyond the need to restrict foreign funding as part of anti-terror measures.

Authorities have been urged to continue a healthy plurastic collaboration between religions and secular practices in Belgium.

The representatives also urged citizens to participate in a constructive manner in the debate and electoral process.

“Democracy and elections are indispensable in the pursuit of a free and just society," they stressed. "The higher the participation, the more democratic the society is.”
