Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko became, on Tuesday, the first individual to spend a thousand days in space, the Russian space agency Roscosmos reported on Wednesday.
Kononenko is currently undertaking his fifth space mission. It began in September 2023 and is set to end in September of this year. The cosmonaut will celebrate his 60th birthday on board the International Space Station (ISS) later this month.
He first ventured into space in April 2008, spending 196 days at the ISS.
In February, Kononenko overtook fellow Russian Gennadi Padalka, who spent 878 days in space.
The eight most experienced space travellers are all Russians.
