Just a week before the 2024 European Football Championship kicks off in Germany, German police have announced that unexpected border checks will be carried out on travellers coming in from Belgium and Luxembourg.
The measure, announced in Trier on Friday by a German federal police spokesperson, is designed to intercept potential violent supporters or political extremists among the football fans.
From next week, officers will perform spot checks on randomly-selected motorists. However, they will ensure traffic flows smoothly by avoiding peak travel times.
These temporary checks, permitted at internal borders within the Schengen free-travel zone, are authorised until 19 July, a few days after the championship final, set for 14 July in Berlin.
