A week before the Euro 2024 football tournament begins in Germany, police intend to carry out random border checks between Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.

Authorities hope this action will identify potential violent football fans or political extremists, the German Federal Police spokesperson announced from Trier on Friday.

Beginning next week, seemingly random checks on drivers will take place at regular intervals. To avoid creating traffic issues, these checks will be scheduled to avoid peak commuting times.

Temporary checks at the internal borders of the Schengen area have been approved until 19 July, a few days after the Euro football final on 14 July in Berlin.
