A 39-year-old man has been arrested for assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, according to Copenhagen police. His hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. local time on Saturday at the Copenhagen City Court.

While details about the incident remain hazy, multiple eyewitnesses have reported that the suspect violently pushed the Prime Minister.

The assault occurs just before the European Parliament election, during a period marked by escalating tensions and a recent string of attacks on politicians throughout Europe.

Across the EU, senior politicians have poured out their support for Frederiksen. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg publicly asserted his strong opposition to all forms of violence against political leaders, stating that NATO allies stand united in defense of shared values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.

French President Emmanuel Macron also extended his support, calling the assault "unacceptable" and wishing Frederiksen a speedy recovery. Surveys indicate that Frederiksen’s Social Democrats party is leading the polls for the upcoming Sunday election.
