People thought Emmanuel Macron was crazy when he called for a snap election last week. But now that the far-right is imploding, the French president’s critics have fallen silent. How did Macron pull off this latest coup?

Following last week’s disappointing EU election results, Macron shocked politics enthusiasts everywhere by calling a snap parliamentary vote for later this month.

Mental health experts urged the president’s aides to keep a close eye on him, as the far-right’s strong showing in the EU poll suggested that Macron had been driven crazy by the heavy losses. Why would anyone call a national election now?

It turns out that it might be a genius move as it has prompted his political rivals to implode in on themselves and jeopardise their chances of neutering Macron during his final years in office. So how did France’s head of state engineer this?

Macron’s first gambit involved hacking into the Facebook accounts of some top National Rally politicians and posting status updates that included “LOL I’m gay” and “We luv migrants xXx”.

He followed that up by painting a fake tunnel on the side of a mountain and then waiting patiently as one by one leading Republican politicians ran head-first into it.

Macron’s final manoeuvres included stealing the One Ring from Éric Zemmour and throwing him into the fires of Mount Doom and asking Marine Le Pen “an idiot says what?”. When the far-right leader replied “what?” her defeat was all but assured.
