Cyclists hit by own support vehicle, two people injured

A support vehicle that was escorting cycling tourists crashed into the group on Sunday morning, seriously injuring one and leaving another with minor injuries.

A elderly woman who was driving a support vehicle riding behind a group of around 15 cycling tourists that she was escorting on Sunday morning lost control of the car and drove into the people she was following. One of the cyclists was seriously injured and is in life-threatening condition while a second sustained minor injuries, the Federal Police confirmed.

The accident happened a little before 09:00 near the Noordland Bridge in the port of Antwerp.

Two cyclists were taken to hospital with minor and serious injuries, while the car driver, who was in shock after the accident, was also taken to hospital. "She is mostly in shock over what happened," An Berger of the Federal Police told local media.

It remains unclear what happened or went wrong for the woman to drive into the group. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
