EU Member States have made a "sound" decision in approving the Nature Restoration Law on Monday, says new Member of the European Parliament Bruno Tobback for Flemish socialist party Vooruit.

"Now the responsibility lies with the Member States to put this law into practice," he stated on Mondayt, urging Flanders for swift action.

Describing the approval as a pivotal and necessary step, Tobback states: "The law is the final touch to the Green Deal and European climate policy previously implemented at the European level. The countries that have signalled a go-ahead today made a smart and sensible choice.”

Citing the Nature Restoration Law as a crucial tool, Tobback emphasises its role in tackling the biodiversity crisis in Europe and preparing us for climate change implications.

"Now it’s down to the Member States to translate this legislation into practice,” reiterates Tobback. “The first priority is crafting a nature restoration plan (which covers the period up to 2032). This task falls to the regions within our country, counting on the Flemish government to constructively engage with the new legislation.”

Tobback's party Vooruit, alongside N-VA and CD&V, hopes to form a new Flemish Government. According to the new MEP, the current agreement for Flanders offers necessary flexibility to account for "varying social, economic and cultural needs, regional and local characteristics and population density."

He urges Flanders for to act with haste: "The quicker Flanders crafts a coherent and extensive nature restoration plan, the faster all stakeholders can gain clarity, ensuring an effective implementation of the Nature Restoration Law."
