A naptha tank leak at Antwerp’s TotalEnergies port area caused significant odour problems in a broad area on Monday evening. Initial reports centred on the Linkeroever district, but the smell soon spread to surrounding towns, including Hoboken, Schelle, Niel, and Aartselaar.
Firefighters in Antwerp reassured the public, stating that no dangerous substance had been released and there was no risk to public health. However, several towns recommended that residents keep their doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure.
“The purpose is only to contain the smell, there is no reason for concern,” rescue services emphasised.
