Sophie Rohonyi is a candidate for the presidency of DéFI following the resignation of François De Smet, she announced on Wednesday morning on Bel RTL radio and in La Libre Belgique newspaper.
DéFI suffered a heavy defeat in the 9 June elections, losing around half of its MPs. De Smet drew the necessary conclusions and resigned after nearly five years at the head of the party.
For Rohonyi, this electoral defeat was the result of mismanagement and communication issues rather than the content of the party's programme. "We are also paying the price of our participation in the Brussels (regional) majority," she summarised.
Alongside the former federal MP, Brussels MP Emmanuel De Bock has also submitted his candidacy for the party presidency.
The results of the internal ballot will be known on 6 July.
