Belgium produced 2.172 million tonnes of bricks in 2023, its lowest result in 10 years and 16% less than in 2022, the Belgian Brick Federation's annual report showed on Thursday.
A total of 809,000 tonnes of ordinary masonry bricks and 1.363 million tonnes of facing bricks were produced.
Exports amounted to 664,679 tonnes, or around 31% of total production, down from 41%. Exports went mainly to neighbouring countries.
In 2023, the United Kingdom remained the leading exporter of facing bricks.
At 187,455 tonnes, imports represented around 8.6% of Belgian production.
