Both car and tram traffic can resume on Rue Royale after being halted since late Tuesday night following the collapse of an empty building across from the concert venue Botanique.
A large part of an empty building bordering the Gesù church collapsed on Rue Royale in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode at around 21:30 on Tuesday. The building was scheduled to be demolished and works had started to take it down, but it collapsed unexpectedly in the process.
There were no casualties but car traffic on Rue Royale, between Rue Brialmont and Rue Saint-Franciscus, was suspended in both directions and the tram lines 92 and 93 were interrupted between Place Liedts and Place Poelaert.
Traffic was expected to resume on Thursday but only by Friday morning were vehicles once again allowed to pass through the street, a spokesperson for the Brussels North police zone told The Brussels Times on Friday morning. "Traffic should be able to pass without any issues," she said.
Brussels public transport operator STIB's spokesperson Guy Sablon also confirmed to The Brussels Times that trams 92 and 93 have been riding as normal again since Friday morning.
