Namur devotes 10 hectares of land to a local farming project

The city of Namur has unveiled plans for the 'Grand Feu Farm,' a sustainable farming project set on 10 hectares of public agricultural land in Bouge.

The land was purchased by the municipality at the end of 2022, with the aim of strengthening local food resilience. A call for projects was issued in December 2023, based on a 27-year land rights agreement.

The winning proposal is the 'Grand Feu Farm,' a cooperative spearheaded by four seasoned farmers. Together, they plan to create a community farm in Bouge, primarily focused on four areas: vegetable farming, goat rearing for cheese production, a mobile chicken coop for egg production, and cultivating plants for herbal tea production.

Their plan also includes small fruit production, the development of a grazed orchard, the sale of vegetable, flower and herb plants, and pig rearing. In addition to this, the collective aims to offer educational and awareness-raising activities.

The favoured marketing method is subscription-based self-harvesting, with initial subscribers expected to have access to the land in Spring 2026. A series of events are to be organised prior to this.
