A large quantity of cigarettes, tobacco, drugs and drug-related products were stolen from Zaventem Airport in late June, Het Laatse Nieuws reports.

Thieves broke into Brucargo, the airport's warehouse for confiscated goods late last month. They stole almost 30 kilograms of cannabis, 1,392 kilograms of hookah tobacco, 75 kilograms of levamisole (a cutting agent for cocaine) and some 269,000 cigarettes.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that the incident occurred but did not disclose how security was breached.

"We are waiting for the judicial investigation," said Francis Adyns from the Finance Ministry, who is responsible for customs. "We have asked The Brussels Airport Company, the owner of the building, to provide extra security for the hangar."

Brucargo was reportedly scheduled for renovation, according to Brussels Airport spokesperson Ihsane Chioua Lehkli. "Additional surveillance cameras will be installed at the customs warehouse at the airport in the near future."

The perpetrators have not been caught but prosecutors say that the operation is "in full swing".

A similar incident occurred in May 2023, when tobacco, cigarettes and other products were stolen from another Brucargo building containing confiscated goods.
