The third edition of the live arts festival, FAME, will take place across various locations in Brussels from 20 to 28 September, focusing on the theme of “Futur.es”, the organising team announced Monday.

FAME, which stands for Festival where Arts Meet Empowerment, aims once again to showcase the work of women and gender minorities with a future-facing outlook. This is of utmost importance in today’s world, which is often described as intensely overwhelming, if not downright terrifying, according to the event organisers.

“Fear usually leads to paralysis, befuddlement, and it’s this state of inaction that we want to counter," the organising team said in a statement. "To fight, one needs to know the kind of future one aspires to. Let’s find the strength to act and work together to imagine this future, surpassing the whispers of the present.”

The festival will explore the theme through three avenues: future policies, future bodies, and future fictions. The programme, due to be released on 30 August at the Riches-Claires, will mix theatre, dance, concerts, workshops and screenings. It will feature artists of all levels, residing in Belgium (both French and Dutch speakers) or abroad, as was the case in previous years.

FAME will also invite local associations, collectives, and activists to raise awareness about their work, and create resonances between the various artistic and political proposals.

“Culture, as a reflection of our societies, has to be at the forefront of the feminist fight,” Brussels’ City Councillor for Culture, Delphine Houba, stresses on the festival's website. “This year, FAME invites us to rethink science fiction through a feminist lens. Let’s come together [...] in September to collectively explore new, fairer and emancipatory ways of imagining.”
