Nearly 767 tonnes of waste were collected last year along Wallonia's motorways at a cost close to €3.5 million, the Society for Supplementary Infrastructure Funding (SOFICO) has announced as it unveiled a new awareness campaign.

This was waste left on the central and side reserves of non-concession motorways, along with waste collected from the slip roads entering and exiting the motorways. However, waste found in and around the bins of rest areas was not included.

In 2022, SOFICO collected 785 tonnes of waste on Wallonia's motorways. However, over the past five years, the annual average has been about 850 tonnes.

The Walloon agency has now launched a new awareness campaign titled “Stop Piling it Up.” It will be displayed on 300 billboards along the sides of motorways and roads from 15 July to 31 August. A related video will also be circulated on social media.

Money invested in road cleaning could be diverted to other needs such as road maintenance, SOFICO stressed.
