Four young victims, three of whom were French nationals, died in a car accident in Mouscron on Sunday evening, according to the Tournai-Mons prosecutor’s office.
Excessive speed is cited as the cause of the accident by judiciary authorities.
The accident happened on the expressway at the Mouscron tunnel exit on Sunday night.
Initially, three fatalities were reported. However, by Monday afternoon, the prosecutor’s office revised the death toll to four.
“The incident took place on Sunday between 21:30 and 21:36. The deceased were all very young, born between 2002 and 2003. They include one Belgian and three French individuals,” Julie Baiwy, on duty at the prosecutor’s office, said.
“The vehicle was the sole factor. A car expert visited the scene. The car was driving far too fast, lost control and hit a tree. Everything was incinerated.”
