Ursula von der Leyen spoke by phone with US President, Joe Biden on Saturday, two days after her re-election as president of the European Commission.

Their conversation focused on supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its aggressive actions, according to the US government.

Von der Leyen, aged 65, commented on a social media platform that the European Union and the United States faced similar challenges in Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific region, and that they were “partners, friends, and allies.”

Biden (81) had been experiencing pressure domestically to not seek re-election for a second term in the White House. He announced his withdrawal from the presidential election race on Sunday.

On the other hand, Von der Leyen on Thursday secured a new five-year term at the helm of the European executive through the votes of the majority of the members of the European Parliament.

Due to her position, she frequently holds discussions with the US President.
