Eluned Morgan set to becomes Wales' first female head of government
Former Health Minister Eluned Morgan tipped to become Welsh premier.

Wales is set to have its first female head of government, following the appointment on Wednesday of former Health Minister Eluned Morgan as the new leader of the Welsh Labour Party, British news agency PA Media reported.

Ms. Morgan (57) woman was the only candidate for the party leadership. A formal vote in the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament, is now needed to confirm her as the region's First Minister, PA Media clarified.

She replaces Vaughan Gething, who had to resign as First Minister after only four months. Gething found himself mired in controversy, having accepted a donation of £200,000 (around €230,000) during his campaign from a businessman convicted of environmental offences.

His decision to sack Foreign Minister Hannah Blythyn also triggered criticism.

After four Welsh ministers resigned in protest against his leadership, Gething decided last week to step aside. Gething was the first black First Minister of the British region.
