Delta Airlines is set to file a lawsuit against Microsoft and cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike for a global computer glitch that caused extensive damage, US broadcaster CNBC reported on Tuesday.
A routine CrowdStrike update on Friday 19 July sparked a massive crash among Windows-based computers. The breakdown impacted about 8.5 million computers, severely affecting institutions such as banks, hospitals and airlines.
Delta Airlines, seriously hit by the worldwide glitch, has now engaged a lawyer to claim compensation for the damage incurred. The airline had to cancel nearly 7,000 flights, leading to over 176,000 customers requesting flight refunds or compensation. Delta estimates the damage at around $350 to $500 million.
As a result of the news, CrowdStrike’s shares plummeted more than 7% at the opening of the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
