An armed man was apprehended in the municipality of Anderlecht on Thursday morning, the Brussels-Midi police zone confirmed.
The rail authorities alerted the Brussels-Midi police at around 10:00 on Thursday regarding a man armed with a machete seen in the Cureghem neighbourhood, near Place Bara, close to Brussels-Midi train station. The reason behind the man carrying such a dangerous weapon remains unclear.
The police promptly arrived at the scene to apprehend the man. Upon their arrival, the suspect had taken refuge near a house. He was subsequently detained and the weapon was found hidden under a bench at Place Bara.
The man's motive is yet to be determined. "Currently, the man is still being questioned, and the investigation is ongoing. Thankfully, there were no injuries," the police concluded.
