Charleroi residents come closer to saving city-centre tree from removal
Residents of Charleroi have been fighting to save tree on Rue de la France.

Residents of Charleroi who have been striving for weeks to save a city centre tree appear to have come a step closer to preventing its removal.

Following a meeting on Tuesday with the residents' representative, city officials said a potential solution had been found.

The tree in question is located on Rue de France, next to the Espace Bertrand. This location has been under substantial reconstruction since the start of August, and the tree was scheduled to be removed because, according to the city, its root pit was too small and its remaining lifespan uncertain.

However, a group of residents rallied against the removal of the tree, collecting hundreds of signatures through a petition.

Following Tuesday's meeting, the city stated it had found a way to maintain the existing root pit and would do everything possible to save the tree.
