Drivers who are several days or even weeks late in getting their vehicle inspected will again have to pay a fine from 1 September. Since June last year, fines for those who were less than a month late were temporarily scrapped.
The fines were scrapped due to the long waiting times at the inspection centres. But waiting times have now reduced significantly and this temporary exception is no longer necessary, said the Department of Mobility and Public Works.
"The long queues at inspection centres have shortened considerably thanks to increased capacity at the centres, less downtime for inspectors and a number of new measures around (re)inspection duty," a statement read. In June 2024, a gradual transition to an inspection once every two years instead of yearly was announced for most cars, which is expected to further reduce the pressure.
Those who are less than a month late will pay a €9.80 fine from September. After six months, that amount could rise to a maximum of €35.
