China has met its renewable energy production targets six years ahead of schedule, the National Energy Administration said on Friday.
In July, the country added wind turbines and solar panels to boost its production by 25 gigawatts (GW), bringing its total capacity to 1,206 GW.
In December 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping set the goal of producing at least 1,200 GW of renewable energy by 2030. More than any other country, China has been investing massively in renewable energies, breaking several records in the wind and solar sectors in recent years.
However, these two sources together account for no more than 14% of all the electricity produced in China. The country's energy supply is still largely dependent on coal-fired power stations, making it the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.
The government estimates that the country's CO2 emissions will peak in 2030 before declining. China is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2060.
