Team Belgian team secured a third medal at the Paris Paralympic Games on Tuesday, when Peter Genyn clinched bronze in the 200-metre T51 category at the Stade de France.
Genyn celebrated the achievement with evident joy, especially since his preparation for the event had been challenging, due to a shoulder injury.
This marks his fifth Paralympic medal. Previously, he secured double gold in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro (100 and 400 metres), followed by gold (100 metres) and silver (200 metres) three years ago in Tokyo.
World champion and world record holder Roger Habsch was expected to secure a medal in the 200-metre T51 category, but fell short. The Liège-based athlete, who finished fifth, had been struggling for months with the effects of a Covid-19 infection.
Both Genyn and Habsch are set to compete in the 100 metres on Friday.
Later in the evening, Selma Van Kerm also competed at the Stade de France. She finished eighth in the T37 category 400-metre final.
Equestrian Barbara Minneci (Grade III) finished seventh on her horse, Stuart, in the individual test. This result qualified her for Saturday’s freestyle competition, open to the top eight.
Swimmer Tatyana Lebrun was unable to create a surprise in the 100-metre butterfly stroke. The Liège native finished 14th in the heats, and failed to make it to the final.
