The Dutch government has announced a multi-billion-euro boost to its defence budget in response to Russia’s “ruthless aggression” against Ukraine.

The Netherlands plans to increase its defence budget by €2.4 billion to a total of €24 billion, according to the government’s annual defence memorandum.

New investments will include tanks, additional F-35 fighter planes, and frigates for submarine warfare, the Ministry of Defence stated.

The majority of the new funds will be allocated to combat capabilities. However, an additional €260 million will also be spent on recruitment and training.

“The ruthless Russian aggression in Ukraine shows that an attack on the NATO alliance is no longer unthinkable,” Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans commented. He added that by increasing its military spending, the Netherlands is making a significant move to prevent such an attack.

“The best way to prevent war is to keep potential adversaries at bay,” he said.

NATO encourages its members to devote 2% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defence. Current NATO estimates suggest that by 2024 the Netherlands will be spending 2.05% of its GDP on defence.

“With this budget, the Dutch government ensures that the country meets NATO standards,” the memorandum read.

Former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is due to take up his post as NATO Secretary General on 1 October.
