The closure of textile company Nyobe Belgotex’s factory in Kruisem, East Flanders, is inevitable, according to unions at the plant.

The group had considered retaining some production in Belgium instead of relying on Asian imports, but management shelved the idea.

Belgotex International in Kruisem had been running at a loss due to competition from Asian imports. The parent company decided to import polymers and threads rather than sustain local production, threatening 157 jobs.

“There are four production units at Nyobe,” ACV/CSC union representative Evi Van Der Bracht explained. “Some units could operate independently. We questioned whether a total shutdown was the best plan, but apparently, these units won’t be able to survive either.”

In the meantime, work continues at the plant.
