The road police will conduct extra checks on heavy vehicles on the Vilvorde viaduct via the inner Brussels ring this weekend.
A travel ban on the viaduct has been in effect for vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes on Fridays from 23:00 to 04:00 on Mondays, due to ongoing construction works. But this is not always observed.
"Despite clear signage and prior weekend policing measures, some bus, coach and lorry drivers ignore this ban. Hence, more checks will take place this weekend," reported the road police.
Breaching this traffic prohibition is a third-degree offence punishable by a €174 fine, plus an additional administrative fee of €10.10, the police added.
