France’s Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, pledged on Wednesday to announce a new government next week.
Appointed by President Emmanuel Macron following legislative elections in which no party secured a majority in the National Assembly, Barnier spoke to media on arriving at the Horizons party’s parliamentary days event in Reims. “We will do things meticulously, seriously,” said the former European Commissioner, who is known for his methodical and serious approach. “I am listening to everyone.”
He said he had met with most group leaders and intended to continue meeting members of parliament and listening to their views.
“Next week, we shall appoint the government,” the new Prime Minister confirmed.
Barnier has the delicate task of forming a delicate coalition within his government team comprising personalities from the left, centre and right.
