Nearly 5 million people passed through Brussels Airport in July and August, 6% more than the corresponding period in 2023, according to the airport's management.
The two months were fairly similar, with 2.5 million passengers in July and 2.4 million in August. "The summer holidays got off to a flying start in July, with a particularly high number of passengers," the Brussels Airport Company commented.
‘This momentum was maintained in August, which also posted solid results. With 2,415,871 passengers transiting through Brussels Airport, August recorded a 7% growth compared with the same period in 2023," it said.
The number of passenger flights increased by 4.7% compared to August 2023. With an average of 151 passengers per flight, three more than a year earlier, August almost reached the all-time record for passengers per flight (152), set in July.
Spain, Turkey and Greece remained the three most popular destinations in August. Italy and Morocco moved up to 4th and 5th place respectively, followed by Germany, the United States, Portugal, France and the United Kingdom.
Air freight volumes at Zaventem fell by 3% last month to 47,500 tonnes. Overall freight volumes were down by a similar amount, totalling around 56,500 tonnes.
