Antwerp decides to extend drinking-in-public ban

The City of Antwerp says it will extend its current ban on drinking in public to include the Hendrik Conscienceplein and Eiermarkt in the city centre.

Previously, the ban covered areas such as Koningin Astridplein, De Coninckplein, Sint-Jansplein and, since May, the Groenplaats and surrounding streets.

However, the city observed that issues like public urination, vandalism, illegal dumping, and altercations related to alcohol consumption have spread to areas just outside the prohibition zones.

“The alcohol ban at Groenplaats has noticeably reduced disturbances, enhancing both the liveability of the square and the vibrant atmosphere of the neighbourhood,” said Mayor Bart De Wever.

“Despite the efforts of local police and increased assistance services, a persistent group continues to reject all assistance,” De Wever added. “Our assessments indicate that the prohibition zone needs to be expanded.”

The new restrictions will also apply to nearby streets such as Schoenmarkt, Jezuïetenrui, and Meirbrug. Alcohol consumption will be prohibited in public spaces except at recognised terraces of hospitality venues, approved locations, and sanctioned events and celebrations.

The city stresses that the alcohol ban will be accompanied by additional measures, including increased police patrols, infrastructural adjustments, and targeted support initiatives for the homeless and people with addictions.
