Starting 30 September, cargo bikes and other heavy bicycles will no longer be allowed on the escalators of Antwerp’s Sint-Annatunnel, commonly known as the Pedestrian Tunnel.
The Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) states that these heavy bicycles damage the escalators and pose a danger to other users. They will still be permitted in the lifts.
AWV reports a significant increase in tunnel traffic with cargo bikes, including electric ones, in recent years. Although cycling at low speeds is permitted in the tunnel, which was originally intended for pedestrians, the escalators are not designed for heavy bicycles.
Many cargo bike riders do not wait for the lifts and use the escalators instead. AWV asserts this not only damages the escalators but also poses a safety risk, as controlling a heavy bicycle on an escalator can be difficult, increasing the chance of incidents with other users.
From 30 September, barriers will be installed at the escalators to block the passage of wide bicycles like cargo bikes. A campaign will also be launched to encourage cargo bike users to use the lifts instead. This campaign will also target those with electric bikes or speed pedelecs. While these bikes will still be able to pass the barriers, AWV aims to encourage their users to use the lifts to alleviate pressure on the escalators.
During the installation of the barriers, the escalators will be closed for a few days.
