Qualcomm has reportedly approached rival Intel to discuss a potential acquisition, according to financial news agency Bloomberg citing sources close to the matter.
The American semiconductor producer is said to have proposed a friendly takeover to Intel, which is currently facing significant challenges. While Qualcomm is interested in a complete acquisition, it has not ruled out the possibility of acquiring parts of Intel.
Whether this approach will lead to an actual takeover remains to be seen. Any deal would take time to finalise and would undergo thorough scrutiny by authorities.
Qualcomm’s interest comes at a difficult time for Intel, which is experiencing one of its toughest periods. For the third consecutive year, Intel has seen declining sales figures and has lost a third of its value on the stock market in the past 12 months.
With Intel’s market value at $93 billion and Qualcomm’s at $188 billion, any potential deal would rank among the largest of its kind.
