Hundreds of people participated in the ‘Grand Resistance Parade’ on Sunday afternoon, demonstrating against the far right.
The event was organised by the movement Hart boven Hard along with numerous civil society organisations, cultural groups, and trade unions.
“We are sounding the alarm against the normalisation of the far right and anti-social measures which threaten our society,” the organisers said.
“On 9 June 2024, Vlaams Belang was nearly the most prominent party,” the protesters emphasized. “Far right parties performed exceptionally well in the European elections. With the local elections on 13 October fast approaching, there is a real danger that Vlaams Belang could gain power in a city or municipality. This is unacceptable to us, which is why we are here today.”
The demonstrators also expressed distrust of the political measures being proposed in the negotiations for the formation of the federal and Flemish governments.
“The measures outlined in the ‘Arizona’ formation will only deepen divisions and inequalities,” they warned. “We call on everyone to unite against this harsh agenda that marginalises vulnerable people and undermines solidarity in our society. Together for social and ecological policies. Together against the far right.”
