Acclaimed British actor Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89, her family announced on Friday.
Best known for her roles as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and the Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, Smith’s career spanned several decades.
She appeared in numerous films and stage productions.
"She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end," according to a statement from her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin.
"She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother."
Throughout her career, Smith won two Oscars, three Golden Globes, and four Emmy Awards.
