The Brussels Fire Brigade rescued two window cleaners on Tuesday afternoon. They were stuck 40 metres above the ground on the outside of a building because their basket was blocked.

The window cleaners were working on a building on Chaussée d'Anvers, near Tour & Taxis in Brussels on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 16:30, their basket became stuck due to a technical defect, according to Brussels fire service spokesperson Walter Derieuw.

As the men were stuck at a height of 40 metres, the fire brigade sent its RISC (Rescue In Safe Conditions) team to the scene to evacuate the pair. The RISC team consists of firefighters who are specialised in carrying out rescue operations in unusual places.

"We could not reach that height with a normal 30-metre ladder. We also have a 64-metre ladder, but unfortunately it was under maintenance," Derieuw said.

"That is why we sent out our climbing team. They were able to bring the men safely back to the ground."
