Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece, and France will together receive over €1 billion from the European Union Solidarity Fund to finance emergency aid and clean-up operations following the floods that hit these countries in 2023.
The floods caused billions of euros in damage. In Italy, the regions of Emilia-Romagna were particularly affected in May, and Tuscany in October and November 2023. with total damages exceeding €11 billion.
In August, Slovenia experienced severe flooding, causing around €7 billion in damages. Neighbouring Austria suffered €200 million in damages.
Greece was struck by a cyclone in September, leading to floods that resulted in over €2 billion in destroyed infrastructure. Northern France faced flooding in November, resulting in €1.9 billion in damages.
To alleviate the immediate needs in these five countries, over €1 billion has been allocated from the Solidarity Fund.
Italy will receive €446.6 million, Slovenia €428.4 million, Austria €5.2 million, Greece €101.5 million, and France €46.8 million. Except for Austria, these countries have already received an advance payment, with the remaining amounts to be disbursed once the Council gives its approval.
This mobilisation of the Solidarity Fund was approved by the European Parliament with a majority of 632 votes in favour, 7 against, and 3 abstentions.
It was the only vote on the agenda during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Parliament.
