A supermoon will illuminate the sky for three days this week, from Wednesday 16 October to Friday 18 October.

Also known as the 'Hunter's Moon', this full moon will be the largest and brightest of 2024. The moon will be at its closest point to Earth, approximately 357,364 kilometres away, according to weather platform Meteovista.

The full moon will occur at 13:26 on Thursday, but will be visible from Wednesday, remaining round for three days. This is the second supermoon of the year, the first having occurred last month. However, the October supermoon is expected to be the largest and brightest of the year. A supermoon is roughly 7% larger and 14% brighter than a regular full moon.

Meteovista forecasts favourable weather conditions for lunar observation this week: "Clouds will traverse the sky, but there will also be large clear spells allowing for easy viewing of the moon."

The so-called 'Full Beaver Moon' will occur on 15 November. The final full moon of 2024 will take place on 15 December.
