The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is set to cut jobs in its news division, with plans to eliminate 185 positions while creating 55 new ones, resulting in a net loss of 130 jobs.
Facing financial pressure, the broadcaster will also cancel its interview programme ‘HARDtalk’ from March 2025. The show has been running since 1997 and featured notable figures such as late presidents Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) and Hugo Chavez (Venezuela).
BBC News CEO Deborah Turness informed staff via email that the cuts are part of a broader effort requiring the BBC to eliminate more than 500 positions. She noted that over 40% of the savings will come from non-staff-related measures.
