The Bolivian government has accused former President Evo Morales of staging an assassination attempt he claimed to have suffered on Sunday.

Shots were fired from Morales’ convoy at a police checkpoint, injuring an officer who sustained a broken leg, Bolivia’s Interior Minister, Eduardo del Castillo, said at a press conference.

Morales alleged on Sunday that his convoy came under heavy fire from armed men while he was travelling to a radio studio in Cochabamba, central Bolivia. One vehicle was reportedly hit by 14 bullets, and another by four. A driver was allegedly shot in the arm and also sustained a head injury.

Morales’ party, the Movement for Socialism (MAS), blamed current President Luis Arce for the attack.

“Nobody believes this drama. Mr Morales, we are tired of the lies,” said the Interior Minister. “You will have to answer for the attempted murder.”
