Painter, sculptor, installation artist, performer, archivist, curator, collector, publisher, gallerist, bookshop owner, and more, John M Armleder (b. 1948, Geneva, Switzerland) is one of the most singular figures and at the same time essential to the art of the past fifty years.
At KANAL– Centre Pompidou, the artist is invited to take over the Showroom areas of the former Citroën garage for seven months: Armleder proposes, in dialogue with a series of new monumental installations that he specifically designed for the site, a constellation of exhibitions, live events and workshops, offering the opportunity to dive into his world and the one of those he loves.

To introduce young people to contemporary art and John Armleders work in particular, but also to underline the pedagogical and inclusive role of KANAL-Centre Pompidou, the museum’s pedagogical team has developed interactive guided tours, adapted to the level of the class and followed by fun workshops at KANAL or at school.
KANAL wishes to help teachers turn KANAL into a genuine work tool and to enable them to develop, based on the museum experience on site, classroom projects that can be adapted to the different curriculums and skill sets.
KANAL also organizes a variety of workshops onsite, ranging from philosophical roundtables, to printing and poetry slam encounters, adapted to each age.

KIDS@KANAL-Centre Pompidou
Young visitors (6-12 years) of KANAL will be welcomed with our KANAL Act booklet, specially designed by Brussels based illustrator Teresa Sdralevich.
KANAL Act is riso printed in our printing workshop at KANAL.
For the very young visitors (3-5 years) our team has commissioned a Belgian author Jérôme Michez to imagine a tale related to the exhibition. The narrated tour through the exhibition It never ends is the fruit of a meeting between the imagination of the author and the fantastic universe of John M Armleder.
The story narrated by one of our mediators (or sometimes by the author himself) is illustrated by works that visitors discover as they make their way through the exhibition in the former car showroom.

The idea of creating a printing works within John M Armleder’s exhibition is not without reminding us that Ecart, the collective co-founded by the artist in Geneva in 1969, was also a publishing house, a printing workshop and a bookshop.
For It Never Ends, KANAL has invited the Brussels-based artists-artisans Daniel Wagener and Axel Claes – who for the occasion have formed the collective ‘Les Conseillers’ – to imagine a programme and to invite other artists around ‘old style’ printing techniques. A risograph appliance rounds out the series of machines bargain-hunted for the occasion and activated weekly.
