A young man was shot and injured at Bonnevie Park in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean on Thursday night, the Brussels-West police zone reported on Saturday confirming information from BRUZZ.

A local resident contacted the police after hearing a loud explosion, and officers arriving to the scene found a man on the ground, severely injured.

"The police administered first aid while waiting for emergency services," said spokesperson Martijn Baes.

Emergency responders confirmed on site that it was a gunshot wound, and the victim was transported to the emergency room in critical condition.

The precise circumstances of the incident are still being determined. The victim has not yet been questioned by the police and remains hospitalised, and the shooter (or shooters) have not been apprehended.

The incident could be related to drug trafficking as Bonnevie Park, located near Comte de Flandre metro station, is known as a site for drug sales.
