More than 180 patients at the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi (GHDC) have already been successfully transferred to a brand new site in Gilly, as part of an extensive relocation operation which began on Saturday.
Almost all activities at the private hospital, which is currently operating at five different sites around the municipality of Charleroi, are being transferred to the brand new Les Viviers site.
The first patients were moved to the new 154,000 square metre hospital in Gilly earlier this year, but Saturday marked the first day of the major relocation efforts.
Approximately 180 patients were transferred to the new Viviers site on Saturday, from three hospitals: Saint-Joseph, Notre Dame, and IMTR (Institute of Medicine, Traumatology and Rehabilitation).
By the end of the day, Saint-Joseph Hospital was completely closed, and several units from Notre Dame and IMTR were also shut down, according to the hospital’s communication service.
The relocation process will continue over three more days.
On 19 November, the move of IMTR will be completed, along with the transfer of some units from Sainte-Thérèse.
On 23 November, all units from the Notre Dame site will be moved to the new buildings.
Finally, on 25 November, the remaining parts of Sainte-Thérèse will relocate, although some activities will continue at the old site.
Le Grand Hôpital de Charleroi was established in 2008 through the merger of five hospitals: Saint-Joseph, Sainte-Thérèse, IMTR, Notre Dame, and Queen Fabiola.
