A new publication tracing the careers of key exponents of Surrealism in Belgium was presented to the public in Mons on Thursday by the General Heritage Department of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, FWB.
The 144-page book, entitled ‘Une partie reste à jouer! Le surréalisme en Belgique dans les collections de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles,’ traces the careers of 16 Surrealist artists. It was created to mark the centenary of the poetic and artistic movement.
The Surrealist Movement is undoubtedly the most famous one to have developed in Belgium, but the Surrealists themselves remain little known to the general public, with the exception of René Magritte, whose name resonates worldwide.
The aim of the new, richly illustrated book is therefore to enable a broad audience to familiarise itself with the poets and artists who made up the movement, and whose works feature in the FWB's collections.
These include Paul Nougé, Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes, Marcel Mariën, Marcel Lefrancq and Paul Delvaux.
